For thirty years I have turned back the pages of history in search of my ancestors here in New Orleans, Louisiana, three continents, seven nationalities, and seven or more countries that dates back to the 15th century when I speak to folks about my ancestry, I asked them do you know what " Creole Gumbo" is?, I say to them pointing to th
For thirty years I have turned back the pages of history in search of my ancestors here in New Orleans, Louisiana, three continents, seven nationalities, and seven or more countries that dates back to the 15th century when I speak to folks about my ancestry, I asked them do you know what " Creole Gumbo" is?, I say to them pointing to the top of my right hand, I am a real bowl of "Creole Gumbo" with the file on top, all mixed up like most of us are. When I started searching for my family roots I had no idea it would uncover, serval noble bloodlines, New Orleans jazz musicians and others, some from, Africa, Haiti , France, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Ireland and the Americas, five Catholic Nuns one of which is the Venerable Henriette Delille founder of the Sisters of the Holy Family and St Mary’s Academy. Most importantly searching through the Louisiana Notarial Archives I uncovered my great-grandfather five generations-removed last will and testament. It read in part, “My name is Jean Casimir and I am from the Yoruba people in Africa and I am in my right mind.......” His will was written on 04 July 1827 at his home in New Orleans, Louisiana located at Royal and Espanola Street, Spain Street today.
At some point in my life my spiritual wanderings began to make sense. My travel through New Orleans, Chicago, New York, Denver, New Mexico, California, India,
South Korea, and New Zealand, were molding my life into becoming an historian; one who
Documents life; capturing and anchoring a life on film to the rails, recorded history so as to
Keep it from disappearing in time like a single wave upon the water, never to be seen
Again.
My camera and I have traced and documented lives, my relatives
back to the fifteen century and rooted in the history of New Orleans, and the many New Orleans families. I have been the photo journalist for spiritual retreats, construction projects and business
ventures as well.
My journey begins my wandering stops, on a hundred degree day………………………………..
In was the summer of August 1988 as I traveled to the mountains in, Taos, New Mexico for a ropes course, belaying off the side of cliffs, sitting at night in "sweat lodges" inside of which it was a 130 degree while outside there was thirty degrees weather and on snow on the mountains. Among other
events that tested your limits. We were walking on fire (1400 degrees hot coals), trust falls, a high challenge in deed. among the 100 participants from all over the world, were a group of (Mormons'), from the, Church of the Latter Day Saints. After the week long seminar was over, they said, “Omar are you in a hurry to travel back to Chicago, Illinois?” I said no, not really. “How about traveling back to, Salt Lake City, Utah, you can stay with us?" I said lets go.
Upon arriving in Salt Lake City they took me on a tour of the city. It was my visit to, Tabernacle Square on the 3rd floor in the, Mormon's Anthology Library which propelled me to research my ancestry. I strolled poured through microfilm for three hours, finding the Casimire's (Casimir), back to the 16th Century. There came a tap on my shoulder, it was Janese. As one of my hosts as she said, “Omar have you found any of your relatives?” I said " Yes, several”. I was so happy. We then drove over to the, University of Utah for a lecture to prepare us for an eight day hike and desert fast called the Desert Quest. I will pick this story up in a later chapter. After my eight-days of Desert Quest I was
excited to arrive back in Chicago, to further my ancestry research, but little did I know my research would take me back to the city of my birth, New Orleans, Louisiana where some of the most important and historical documents are housed in the depositories of the Louisiana of the Division New Orleans Public Library the Louisiana State Archives, the Archdiocese of New Orleans Archives the, U.S. Mint Colonial Archives, and the Williams Research Center which is in the Historic French Quarters. So off I went to New Orleans.
The Historic New Orleans Collection (HNOC) and William Research Center formed as a non-profit organization was established in 1966 by General and Mrs. L. Kemper Williams which is a private collection of Louisiana materials, to keep the collection intact and available to the public for research.
The William Research Center which opened in 1996 is comprise more than 30,000 library items, including books, pamphlets, sheet music, broadsides, theater programs, and periodicals; more than two miles of documents and manuscripts; a microfilm collection; and approximately 400,000 photographs, prints, drawings, and paintings.
Thanks to Susie and other staff members and the many hours spent in the Williams Research Center I have discovered many records on my family.
Also included in the center are major research fields of colonial Louisiana Purchase, Battle of New Orleans, Civil War, Mississippi River life, cartography, transportation, plantations, urban development, Louisiana artists, literature, architecture, jazz, French Quarter, and Mardi Gras.
At a workshop for seekers like myself I met, Edna Smith, one of the best genealogists from the Bluebonnet Library in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
After her work shop, she said to me," Casimire, if you are going accurately search your family ancestry, it's imperative that you have an organized system. First get ring binders for all your records with sheet protectors list the source, dates and page numbers on the back of each document for you will go back to the same records hundreds of times and you must have a lease two sources for each person in your ancestry line".
